Winter has arrived in India. It is a season of cough and colds. This season is especially hard on old people and young kids. Most mothers will dread this season as their toddlers will get affected with cough and cold. Kids and toddlers gets easily affected with cold due to their weak immune system. As a mother you should take enough precautions so that you toddler stays happy and healthy. Out of the many available Indian home remedies for cough and cold in toddlers, I’ve listed below the most common and effective ones. All these home remedies have been passed on from generation to generation. They are not only helpful for kids but also for adults.
Please make sure that you don’t use all the home remedies at one time. Use one at a time and see the affect it will have on your baby. If it is helpful then stick with it, if not go to the next.
Indian home remedies for cough and cold in toddlers:
1. Turmeric milk:
Turmeric has antiseptic properties, and due to this it is known to cure viral infections such as cough and cold. Mix a teaspoon of turmeric powder to a glass of warm milk and give it to your kid every night before going to bed. It provides immediate relief for a sore throat and runny nose. Since milk is a rich source of calcium, it also provides energy to your kid.
2. Vicks Vaporub:
Before your child goes to sleep, apply vicks vaporub on her feet and put on thick socks. She will have a good night’s sleep.
3. Steam inhalation:
Steam inhalation is good if your kid has thick phlegm. Pour hot water in a vessel and add vicks vaporub to it. You may also add a few drops of eucalyptus oil. Make your toddler inhale it by covering them with a thick towel or blanket. Make sure that fans are not switched-on while your kid is inhaling.
Crush ginger and add a few drops of ginger juice to a glass of warm milk and give it to your child before going to bed. It will decongest the chest and provide immediate relief.
Heat coconut oil and put some powdered camphor in it. After the oil has cooled, pour 4 to 5 drops on your palm and rub it evenly over the chest, sides and back of your little one. Camphor may irritate your toddler’s skin, so please make sure to use as little camphor as possible. You may also store it in an air tight container and use it whenever needed. This is the best remedy for chest decongestion.
Take some ghee in a pan and heat it. Add 2-3 pepper pods to it and roast slightly. Remove from ghee and grind the pepper to paste. Add this paste to ghee and give it to your child. This remedy is very good if your kid is suffering from dry cough.
7. Indian Gooseberry (Amla)
The best remedy against cough and cold is to consume Vitamin C daily. And the best source of Vitamin C is Amla, also called Indian Gooseberry. Mix one teaspoon of dry amla powder in one teaspoon of honey and give it to your kid. Your little one will never get a cold again.
8. Keep Hydrated:
When your child is having a bout of sneezing and coughing, it is very important that you keep her hydrated. Drinking purified water at regular intervals will reduce the throat inflammation along with flushing out the infection and thus help fight the common cold. Other fluids in the form of warm soup or fresh juice are also helpful in replenishing the lost energy.
9. Mustard Oil:
Heat 5-10 teaspoons of mustard oil in a pan. Add crushed garlic and ajwain (carom) seeds to the oil and sauté (tadka) it. Let the oil cool. Strain the oil and store it in a bottle. Whenever needed, heat the oil a little bit and rub it on your children’s neck, throat, chest, back and forehead. This is one of the best home remedy to get of cough.
10. Tulsi (Holy Basil)
Add 2 teaspoons of fresh holy basil to a cup of water. Put on the heat and bring the water to a boil. Allow it to steep for 5 minutes. Strain it and make your kid to drink it. Tulsi tea is great for cough relief.
